Things I’ve learned from being a writer:

I’ve learned quite a few things from being a writer. A very important lesson is that you must have patience. First of all it takes a good chunk of time to write a novel in the first place—you nurture it, it becomes like a baby to you, then you edit it, coddle it some more. You’ll probably have some critique partners and/or beta readers check it out. Then you’ll make some subsequent changes based on their all-important input. Then you can finally set your baby free into the world and query agents…and wait for a response. You have to learn to deal with rejections that we all invariably get, but if you’re lucky enough to snag one, it’ll be one of the happiest days of your life. And of course, you’ll probably have to edit some more based on your agents notes. Then comes the exciting time of going on submission to publishers. This is another awesome, yet nail biting time, making you wait…yet some more. Again, if you’re lucky enough to have a publisher ask to acquire your novel, you will be screaming from the rooftops in happiness…but then, you can expect more edits…sometimes several rounds of them.

But, and it’s a big but—It’s all worth it, because you did it! You’re a published author. You climbed that mountain and succeeded!
Maybe that’s why they say patience is a virtue, because I believe if you persevere, it will happen. Maybe not as fast as you’d like, but it will.

One more important thing I’ve learned from being a writer is that I used to think that writing was very solitary. In some ways it is, but I’ve met so many friends on Twitter and in the writing community who understand what I’m going through every step of the way. I’ve learned that having writing friends is a blessing, and can be the thing that keeps you typing away on your keyboard even on days when you don’t feel like it. My critique partners have also become my friends.

Good luck to anyone starting out in the writing world. Remember to have patience and make as many other writing friends as you can.

After arriving at lucky home twenty-seven, she stumbles upon a mysterious boy with magical powers claiming to be her guardian . . . and warning of imminent danger. Despite the obvious sparks between them, Jewel discovers a relationship is forbidden, and the more she learns about dark, brooding Roman, she begins to question who she can even believe — the family who raised her, or the supposed sworn protector who claims they’ve been lying to her all along.

As she struggles to uncover who her family has really been running from, she is forced to hide her birthmark that reveals who she is.
